December is a very unfortunate time for such decisions because it makes
it look like a New Year resolution. However, publishing this early next
year would make it look even worse. Similarly, not writing anything
would allow me to bail whenever I feel like it and I don't want that.
I want to be able to open this post and read through it, and commit to
the decision I made.
I decided to publish things consistently, at least one thing
each month to be precise.
This is third time I attempt it and second time I do it with a blog.
Last time blog was the main target. I have no idea why. This ended
up with me writing and removing nonsensical articles every two weeks
(which was the time frame). This time, I want to avoid it, hence the
slightly more reasonable period choice.
The scope is also a bit broader. Any complete software release
will also count. Whether I write a script, library, game, or a new
version of an existing piece of software, it will count. For me, a
"complete" release is something somewhat loose, but usually involves:
a repository, some kind of distribution method, manual page(s), maybe
other documentation, system test suite, maybe a homepage. Or, more
vaguely, something that simply feels complete.
Anything else, as long as it's somehow documented, should also work:
a 3D print of a handle for old telescope to fit it on a new mount,
a new antenna design, synthesizer or other PCB builds, etc.
Of course, writing and publishing an article here is also a choice.
Well, as long as it's somewhat helpful, interesting, or otherwise good.
For once, I feel somewhat optimistic. This year presents itself
decently. I missed March, May, July, and August. Last year had a similar
score month-wise. Now, I need to match the trend. Good luck to me!
